This screening of "The Last Command," will be introduced by Professor Olga Matich (University of California, Berkeley) and is
directed by Joseph von Sternberg; starring Emil Jannings et al. Synopsis: A former general, an aristocrat who lost everything when imperial Russia collapsed in the revolution, is hired by his former foe, a revolutionary, to re-enact the revolutionary conflict on the screen. Emil Jannings, the lead actor, received the first Academy Award for this role. Illustrating both the presence of the Russian theme in interwar Hollywood and the presence of Russian actors and directors there, the film opens the symposium on "Emigre Encounters: Exiles and Their Legacies" at the Amherst Center for Russian Culture. |
