“Royal Blood” is an original musical and senior thesis in composition by Michael O’Connor ’12. "Royal Blood" explores the last years of the Romanov Dynasty in Imperial Russia; it investigates the personal relationships between Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, Sergius Witte (the advisor to the throne), Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich, and Grigorii Rasputin. It also highlights the importance of Hemophilia in their collective relationship, and how it contributed to their fate. The work is heavily inspired by the book Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie. The piece will be conducted by its composer and feature five vocalists and an 18-piece orchestra of Amherst College students. It is directed by Michail Charalampidis (Hampshire College ’13).
