Stavros Center for Independent Living Inc. announces an evening of music with acclaimed cellist Eugene Friesen & pianist extraordinaire Steven Schoenberg. Stavros Center for Independent Living was established in 1974 as a 501 c 3 not-for-profit organization. We are a grass-roots advocacy organization that works for justice and access for people with disabilities in western Massachusetts. We currently serve 6000 individuals. The Stavros Center for Independent Living Services enable people with disabilities to live in an environment that encourages and supports the rights of people with disabilities to achieve and maintain a sense of autonomy in their lives. Our advocates accomplish this by providing counseling, skills training, general encouragement and support to people with disabilities in need of such assistance. Over 50% of our 135 employees are disabled. Some of the Independent Living programs are: Home Sweet Home, a program that has built more than 360 ramps to help people stay in their homes; The Peer Advocacy program provides one on one consultation with consumers to help navigate housing, medical, legal, education and accessibility needs; Transition to Adulthood program helps young people with disabilities figure out the future while they are still in high school; Housing Services; Deaf and hard of hearing services; and The Equipment Loan program maintains a supply of used equipment that is available to our consumers for a specified period of time. All of the equipment is loaned at no cost. The Artists: Eugene Friesen - Grammy award-winning cellist and composer with the Paul Winter Consort, Eugene Friesen has performed worldwide. His music has been inspired by trips deep into the Grand Canyon, travels in Brazil and Siberia, eye-to-eye contact with whales, and playing in great cathedrals and concert halls. Eugenes openness to new experience, his revelations in nature, and his respect for - and ability to connect with - children, are clearly conveyed in his live solo performance that moves from jazz to rock, from classics to comedy, from improvisation to composition, all with energy and ease. "The music is beautiful and so is the playing." - Yo-Yo Ma
