Appropriating Art Into Dress
Curator Stella Schwartz ‘11 examines how patterns and motifs from certain early 20th-century European art movements filtered into everyday American dress by comparing three American dresses from the 1920s with artwork of the time. This project is the culmination of a research project proposed by Ms. Schwartz and Professor Kiki Smith and supported this summer by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The project involved the study and conservation of twenty-one garments from the Smith Historical Clothing Collection, an archive of over 1000 objects donated by college alumnae and friends. Through January 31, 2009.
