Riverscaping Symposium
Panels covering a multi-disciplinary range of approaches to the river will take place at Amherst College. We have called for papers concerned with everything from: the river as a literary metaphor, as a form of choreography, as iconography, or as inspiration for a symphony; the role of the river in national or political confrontations or resolutions, or patterns of slavery and repression; or, as the catalyst for the design of greenways, parks, watersheds, or urban farming; or the river as a site for creative economies, educational innovations, and historical heritage institutions; etc. Invited speakers are coming from around the globe, including Jonathan Lash, President of Hampshire College; Jinnai Hidenobu, Faculty of Engineering, Hosei University, Tokyo; Joop Varekamp, Environmental Studies, Wesleyan University; and T. Scott McMillin, English Department, Oberlin College. Chairs and respondents include Karen Koehler, Art and Achitectural History, Hampshire College; Sam Morse, Art History, Amherst College; Anna Martini, Geology, Amherst College; Bob Schwartz, History, Mount Holyoke College; and Heidi Gilpin, German Studies, Amherst College. Activities also include tours of the art and science of the river at the Mead Art Museum and Natural History Museum at Amherst.
“Performing the River” takes place on Saturday evening at Hampshire College. Artists and musicians include Polina Barskova, Deb Gorlin, Daniel Warner and Faith Conant with the Five College African drumming group.
