Picturing Enlightenment: Thangka in the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College
This special exhibition marks the completion of an extensive project to conserve the Mead Art Museum’s collection of thangka (pronounced “tan-kah”)—scroll paintings of Buddhist figures. So fragile that they have remained largely inaccessible to scholars and museum visitors for nearly six decades, Amherst College’s eighteen thangka, primarily from Tibet, have been gently cleaned, stabilized, and repaired by conservators at Museum Textile Services in Andover, Massachusetts, under the leadership of Camille Myers Breeze. A generous grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation and additional support from the Amherst College Department of Religion underwrote the conservation treatment. The Louis and Nettie Horch Foundation provided further support for the conservation of one thangka.

In Times of War and Peace – A Choral Extravaganza
A choral extravaganza featuring over 250 singers and full symphony orchestra will be performed by the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra & Chorus and the Hampshire Choral Society. Entitled "In Times of War and Peace,"  two exciting works will be performed:  Franz Josef Haydn's "Mass in Time of War" and William Walton's monumental Belshazzar's Feast, a work for baritone, double chorus, large orchestra and off-stage brass. This collaboration between arts groups brings a level of excitement to performances that cannot be attained by a single group alone.  The melding of performers into a single group is a thrilling experience for participants and audience alike; both are strongly affected by the quality of the performance and the emotional message of the music itself.

Ticket information: At the Fine Arts Ticket Office or via the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra website (www.pvso.org).

Sponsor: Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the Hampshire Choral Society (co-sponsors)

Handicapped accessible.
